That's Bettini giving it everything he has to secure the win in the name of his recently deceased brother while wearing the World's jersey. Look at the emotion pour from him as he crosses the line. Beautiful racing.
Wegmann goes so deep, including risking everything on that descent.
Bettini outclassed everyone that day by a mile though...First rider to win worlds and Lombardy in the same season since Tom Simpson (correct me if I'm wrong)
diablo - I am not sure of the gesture. If I were to guess it is probably something like: "Il Grillo is too strong, he carries the power of the rainbow stripes and he is fueled by raw emotion. I am going back to the team car for a ride back to the hotel". At least, that it is what I would have said.
ad11 - I have looked and looked and it seems it is not available from the usual sources. European live feed collectors would be the only place I can think of.
I hope everybody caught the Gerolsteiner rider bumping the guard rail at the apex of the turn at 0:45 remaining. Wow.

ReplyDeleteCheck out Wegmann's expressions from deep inside the pain cave.
ReplyDeleteOne of the best races of '06. He was on some sort of perfect day where nobody could touch him, going up or down.

That was an awesome race by "Il Campioncino"
ReplyDeleteWhat kind of gesture is that Panaria guy making at 1:22?
Does anyone have this race on DVD? I would love to get a copy if possible.

Oscar Camenzind won worlds and Lombardy in 1998, though he doesn't have much credibility these days...
ReplyDeletediablo scott,
ReplyDeleteThe Paneria guy looks to be either making a gesture to express that they better chase, OR that the guys at the front are going a bloc.
