1996/1997 Cyclocross Worlds

96 still remains my favorite Worlds since I discovered the sport. This was one of the last years before it became so highly specialized and dominated by the Belgians. Adri Van Der Poel was the Man. He could take you to task on the road and then let you have it on the 'cross circuit. I love the amount of barriers they used back then and the general high speed of the course. The French rider bunnyhopping was something to see back then too. Pontoni blew this race, but Van Der Poel pulled the smartest move of the day taking a change on the last lap to switch to tires that were pumped up hard for the sprint. Brilliant! Too bad he crashed out the next year in Germany. I'm not sure he would have beaten Pontoni on that day, but it would have been close. 'Cross is the best discipline within our sport. I can't wait for Lars to lower the Boom on everyone this year.

It is becoming that time of year here again on the west coast. Had my first booties and rain jacket rides in a long time this week. The cross bike is being built back up and my apartment will soon be smelling like tubular glue.

The hipsters gobbled them all up.

Spinergy Wheels fell victim to the UCI fun governors and were banned.
