1999 was his best season ever. Amazing what he did that year. Did you know that when he was in the Vuelta he just met Sarah Pinaci. After a stage that he won, he just wanted to see her but the team manager refused. He said: "OK, then I'll resign". After all the let him go. Someone of the team drove him several hours. He stayed the night, and in the early morning they drove him back to the Vuelta. That day he won the stage again! He was one of the biggest Belgium talents, but couldn't handle the stress. Now he's busy working on his next comeback... at the Mitsubishi-Jartazi team of Jef Breakeveld.
Man, I still hold a torch for VDB... Every time I hear of a comeback, I fantasize that this may be his year. The classics (or the peleton, for that matter) will never be the same without L'enfant Terrible in the group.
The modern classics have lost their luster for me since there are no more from the class of 1999 in the group... I long for the days of Tchmil, Museeuw, Bartoli, and our boy Frank in the spring.
I wanna see VDB come back. He deserves it! This season, he tried to commit suicide! After a month he rode again. He rode some crits and after 10 crits or so (1 month, august), he rode Paris-Brussel: He rode in front of the peleton when they entered Brussel! He still has the potential but...
while we're at it.. as a fan....i just want to see Clinger in a good place, with his head on, and racing smart and healthy and sans dark shadow/trips to bad alleys. lots of talented kids in the sport have a hard time getting it right... VDB is the most talented... but not the only guy working stuff out.
For many professional cyclists the Spring campaign is the toughest of the season; it means training from October until March in the worst, character-building weather conditions Europe can dish out. This weather and the suffering that is bicycle racing breed characters known as "hardmen".
Select cyclists tackle these conditions in shorts, long sleeve jerseys or short sleeve jerseys with arm warmers, wind vests, and shoe covers. A true hardman opts to forego the knee or leg warmers and instead chooses an embrocation to cover the knees. The liniment provides warmth for the legs and keeps the blood circulating and muscles supple. Embrocation and the sheen created is affectionately known as "Belgium knee warmers". The hardest of cyclists will sport bare legs in the most ruthless of conditions.
Belgium Knee Warmers are indicitive of the many subtleties that make professional cycling so enthralling.
I spent 20 years of my life working in the bicycle industry, turning wrenches and selling bikes for some of the industry's best shops. I have extensive experience designing and constructing frames in both steel and titanium and have performed thousands of bike fits. I am passionate about bicycles in all forms. The bicycle provides me with physical and mental health and taps me into a social pipeline that allows me to share my passion with others. I ride as often as possible and love the flow of a hard group ride. Check back for musings about all things road cycling and, especially, the Spring Classics. The devil is in the details and I am an expert in the useless minutia that makes up our discipline.

Ah, the age of my innocence. I could re-live any of the classics from the 90's over and over again. Boogerd, Casagrande, VDB, the Lion of Flanders.
Though, anonymous, I do wonder if he went to see Pinaci or a doctor friend?
Nevermind, nevermind...
...I'd rather not know.
HUP TCHMIL!!
Thanks for the perfect x-mas morning vid to compliment my coffee and waffles.

Where's the money shot?
Ted
Racing during that time period has been completely soured by all the doping revelations.
Go Slipstream and Team High Road! Let's see humans race bikes, not chemically-enhanced robots. I want to see suffering, lead changes, bonking, etc.
